How Long Does a Real Estate Photo Shoot Take?

One of the most common questions from Chicago realtors: "How much time do I need to block off for the photographer?" Here's the honest answer — broken down by property size and what's included.

Real estate photography in Chicago moves at a different pace than most markets. A city where a Wicker Park two-flat, a Naperville colonial, and a Gold Coast high-rise condo can all be listed on the same day demands a photographer who knows how to work efficiently without cutting corners. The short answer is that most residential shoots take between 45 minutes and 2.5 hours on-site — but the actual number depends on factors that most realtors don't think to ask about until the photographer is already there.

The single biggest variable isn't square footage — it's preparation. A 3,000 sq ft home where every surface is cleared, every light is on, and every blind is open can be shot in 90 minutes. The same house with dishes in the sink, half-packed moving boxes in the hallway, and a dog that needs to be put away for every shot can easily run to three hours. This is why the prep work your seller does the day before directly controls how fast you get your photos back.

What Happens During the Shoot

A professional real estate photo session isn't just walking room to room with a camera. At K94, the shoot starts with a quick walkthrough of the entire property to identify the best angles, assess natural light, and decide the shooting order — usually exterior first (to catch optimal light), then the main living areas, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Each room is shot from multiple angles using HDR bracketing: the Canon R6 Mark II fires 3–5 exposures per composition, which are later merged in post-processing to produce photos where both bright windows and dark interior details are perfectly exposed.

For a typical Chicago 3-bedroom home, expect 20–35 photos from a standard shoot, 40–55 from a Pro package that includes video. The editing and delivery window is 24 hours from the end of the shoot — so if we finish at 2pm, your finished photos arrive by 2pm the following day. Most Chicago agents receive their files the same evening. MLS-ready resolution, web-optimized copies, and social media formats are all included in one Google Drive link.

Shoot Time by Property Size

Condo / Apartment (under 1,000 sq ft)45–60 minutes
Small Home (1,000–2,000 sq ft)1–1.5 hours
Mid-size Home (2,000–3,500 sq ft)1.5–2 hours
Large Home (3,500–5,000 sq ft)2–3 hours
Luxury / Estate (5,000+ sq ft)3–4+ hours

What Adds Time to a Shoot?

Video Walkthrough

Adding a listing video adds about 30–45 minutes on top of the photo session. The photographer needs to walk each room at the right pace and often do multiple takes.

Drone Aerial Photos/Video

Drone work adds 20–40 minutes depending on property and weather. FAA regulations require a licensed pilot, and wind can affect the session.

Clutter and Prep

If the home isn't staged or decluttered before arrival, the photographer may need to move items — which adds time and isn't always included. Have the home ready before the photographer arrives.

Natural Lighting Windows

In Chicago, shooting in flat winter light vs. bright summer sun makes a big difference. Some photographers schedule around golden hour, which adds coordination time.
